The best way to understand that speech is to read the whole play. At least read the first two acts. The "To be, or not to be" soliloquy appears in the first scene of Act 3. Acts 1 and 2 let you see how Hamlet's state of mind has developed up to that point in the play. As you probably know, Hamlet is contemplating suicide in that speech. He's asking himself, "To live, or not to live."
