Will my old job hire me back?

I left my job foe a new company about month ago and know the new company cut my hours i only get like 8 hours week and i cant live on that? So do think my old company would take me back. my buddy works there and he told they haven't hired anybody in your place so it's worth a call like he said all they can do is say no? So should i contact them and what are the chance they will take me back? help please?
