For those who have had vasectomies?

My husband had a vasectomy on Tuesday. He still has lots of swelling and pain (not to mention that the whole area is completely black/purple). Is this normal, or should he go back and get it checked out? We were under the impression that after a couple of days, everything would be pretty much back to normal (a little bruising was expected).
